Makeblock mBot v1.1 – Blue/BluetoothMB-90050
mBot is a robot kit from Makeblock that is perfect as an educational robot. It's easy to build, modify, and program. It is great for beginners, but with the amount of sensors and other features it has built-in, advanced users can also find many uses for it.
The mBot comes as a kit that contains 45 pieces and can be built in 10-20 minutes.
The new 1.1 version comes with an improved front wheel, a rechargeable LiPo battery and plasticc casing for the electronics. The new version can be powered either with the LiPo battery or with 4xAA batteries.
Requires one CR2025 battery for the IR remote that is not included.
This is the blue mBot and comes with a Bluetooth module for wireless communication. The Bluetooth version can also be controlled with an iOS app (Android version coming soon). See the related items for other versions of the mBot. For schools and other group teaching we recommend the 2.4 GHz version for easier connectivity in a classroom with multiple mBots.
Please note that the mBot is not a toy and not inteded for small children. It contains smalls parts that can be a choking hazard.
The Built-In Program
The mBot comes with a built-in program that allows you to use the IR remote to control the robot. There are three different default modes that you can choose using the letter keys of the remote:
- Mode A – Remote control. Move the mBot using the arrow keys of the remote. Buttons 1-9 control the speed.
- Mode B – Obstacle avoidance. The mBot moves around and tries to dodge obstacles that it detects with the ultrasonic sensor.
- Mode C – Line follower. The mBot uses the line sensor to detect and follow a black line on the floor. The kit comes with a printed line drawing that you can use to test this feature.
The mBot is being controlled by a microcontroller board called mCore. It is an Arduino compatible microcontroller made by Makeblock, and it has been specifically designed to be used on the mBot and is compatible with the Makeblock Me-modules. There are two ways to program the mBot.
- Graphical programming using mBlock – a graphical programming environment based on Scratch. You can also convert your mBlock code to Arduino code with the software.
- Text-based programming using the Arduino software.
For programming your mBot, you need to connect it with to your computer using a USB cable. Please note that you need to install a driver to your computer from the makeblock website in order to upload your code. When using the mBlock software, you can also control the mBot wirelessly using either Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz wireless modules.
